My Life Outside the Academy

My Humble Beginning
This photo captures the beginning of my journey. It reminds me of the sacrifices and hard work necessary to achieve my lifelong dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. It represents our shared ambition, hope, and determination to put everything on the line to achieve our goals.
Looking at the photo, I see six fresh faces, eager and full of hope, ready to embark on a journey that will shape one's life. We stood together, bound by our shared ambition, supporting each other through the rigorous selection process.
It was a time of uncertainty but also immense excitement, as we all had our sights set on the coveted prize of becoming a Cadet in the Philippine National Police Academy.
Sadly, only three of us made it to the Academy, but that didn't deter my friends from pursuing their dreams. One became a jail officer, bravely serving our community in a different capacity, while the other became a professor, dedicating his life to imparting knowledge to the next generation.
Looking at it now, I am happy for my friends and myself because we made it this far.
Dazzling Champ
"A man might not know what future awaits him"

I was once a guy who dreamed of having a comfortable life, a progressive career to provide necessities to my family, and buy the things I wanted. What else could a young mind have but to draw and cross the bridges of impossibilities? Hence, I entered a government institution to pursue high school. I gained three close friends whom I consider siblings too. We do things together, such as eating in various restaurants after classes, going out and having fun, and many other things typical peers do.
Not until one day when here came the curiosity of becoming a public servant and following the footprints of my grandfather as a policeman. I decided to give it a shot at the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA), which I told no one about, and with the favor of the Almighty, I passed the said examination. Excitingly, I tried applying to be one, but the stars did not align with me. Just like the others, I was devastated during those times and started questioning and doubting my capabilities.
Moving forward, I enrolled at Cagayan State University (CSU) to continue pursuing my goals. In 2018, I took the examination for PNPA, and this time the door that I’d been knocking on opened at the right time. Conquering the tri-Academy, one of my friends passed the examination for the Philippine Military Academy, and the other two also proceeded to the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy.
We once dreamed of becoming public servants and serving the people. Who would have thought that these simple dreams would become a reality? Even though we are far apart and taking different paths, we still have one vision to go back home with successful endeavors and bring pride to our alma mater. We are still developing the skills to be good leaders, brave future police and military officials, and well-trained merchant marine officers.
A man might not know what the future holds, but one thing is for sure, if we know how to put our plans into execution, our dream will come true. It may not be easy but always trust and endure the process. Remember that we are the drivers of our destinies.
True North
"True North" by Bill George is a powerful book that explores the essential qualities of authentic leadership. The book profiles leaders from all walks of life, including business, government, and non-profit sectors, to offer insights and lessons on how to lead with authenticity and purpose.

As a Cadet in the Philippine National Police Academy, I found this book incredibly inspiring, as it spoke directly to my leadership development journey. Like the leaders profiled in the book, I was embarking on a lesson of purpose and navigating upcoming challenges and obstacles.
One of the most powerful message of True North is the importance of self-awareness in leadership. The book emphasizes the need to understand oneself, to be honest about one's strengths and weaknesses. As a Cadet, I have found this to be an essential aspect of leadership development, as it helped me to identify areas where I need to improve and to develop a plan to address those areas.
Another key lesson from True North is building relationships based on trust and respect. The book emphasizes the need for leaders to be open, honest, and transparent and to build relationships based on mutual trust and respect. As a Cadet, I have found that building trust with my fellow Cadets and officers I work with has been essential to my success as a leader.
True North also highlights the importance of having a clear sense of purpose and direction as a leader. The book emphasizes the need for leaders to have a strong vision and to be committed to a higher purpose beyond personal gain. As a Cadet, I have found that having a clear sense of purpose helped me to stay focused on my goals and to remain motivated even when faced with challenges.
Yet, like the leaders profiled in the book, I remained committed to my values of integrity, service, and dedication to the greater good. As I read the stories of leaders from all walks of life, I was amazed by the common threads that ran through their experiences, a steadfast commitment to their principles, a willingness to learn from their mistakes, and an unwavering sense of purpose.
These qualities are what I have strived to embody as a Cadet, and they are the ones that will serve me well throughout my career in law enforcement. True North has given me a framework for leadership that I will carry with me for the rest of my life, a set of guiding principles that will help me stay focused and grounded, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Pale Blue Eye

Pale Blue Eye by Louis Bayard is a story that explores the complex relationship between a young Edgar Allan Poe and a retired police detective, Gus Landor. The novel delves deep into the dark, twisted mind of a killer as well as the psyche of the brilliant but troubled Poe. As a Cadet in the Philippine National Police Academy, I found many lessons in this book that related directly to my experience of Cadetship.
One theme in Pale Blue Eye is the importance of mental fortitude and emotional resilience. We must be mentally and emotionally strong to endure the stresses and strains of work without becoming overwhelmed. The book shows the ability to remain calm and composed.
Another important lesson is the value of determination and perseverance. The novel shows Poe and Landor's determination to solve the case. As Cadets, we have a similar sense of determination essential to succeed in the police force. Whether facing grueling physical training or challenging academic courses, we must push ourselves to our limits to achieve our goals.
The novel also highlights the importance of collaboration and teamwork. Although Poe and Landor are initially at odds with one another, they eventually learn to work together to solve the mystery of the case. As Cadets, we must work as a team to succeed.
Another lesson is the importance of attention to detail. Landor is a meticulous detective who pays close attention to the details of his investigation. As Cadets, we have to be detail-oriented and be able to analyze complex situations to identify the key facts and evidence. This skill is essential for success, where even the smallest detail can make all the difference.
Finally, Pale Blue Eye offers a cautionary tale about the dangers of obsession. Poe and Landor become so consumed by the mystery they are trying to solve that they lose sight of their lives and relationships. As Cadets, we must maintain a healthy work-life balance to succeed in the police force. Obsessing our work can lead to burnout and ultimately undermine our effectiveness as law enforcement officers.
