True North

True NortH by Bill George is a powerful book that explores the essential qualities of authentic leadership. The book profiles leaders from all walks of life, including business, government, and non-profit sectors, to offer insights and lessons on how to lead with authenticity and purpose.

As a Cadet in the Philippine National Police Academy, I found this book incredibly inspiring, as it spoke directly to my leadership development journey. Like the leaders profiled in the book, I was embarking on a lesson of purpose and navigating upcoming challenges and obstacles.

One of the most powerful message of True North is the importance of self-awareness in leadership. The book emphasizes the need to understand oneself, to be honest about one's strengths and weaknesses, and to work to improve. As a Cadet, I have found this to be an essential aspect of leadership development, as it has helped me to identify areas where I need to improve and to develop a plan to address those areas.

Another key lesson from True North is building relationships based on trust and respect. The book emphasizes the need for leaders to be open, honest, and transparent and to build relationships based on mutual trust and respect. As a Cadet, I have found that building trust with my fellow Cadets and officers I work with has been essential to my success as a leader.

The book emphasizes the need for leaders to have a strong vision and to be committed to a higher purpose beyond personal gain. As a Cadet, I have found that having a clear sense of purpose has helped me to stay focused on my goals and to remain motivated even when faced with challenges.

Yet, like the leaders profiled in the book, I remained committed to my values of integrity, service, and dedication to the greater good. As I read the stories of leaders from all walks of life, I was amazed by the common threads that ran through their experiences.

These qualities are what I have strived to embody as a Cadet, and they are the ones that will serve me well throughout my career in law enforcement. True North has given me a framework for leadership that I will carry with me for the rest of my life, a set of guiding principles that will help me stay focused and grounded, even in the most challenging circumstances.
